Catalyst Session 2 | Malcolm Gladwell
I’ve not read any of Malcolm Gladwell’s books, but after hearing him at Catalyst (and after hearing a recommendation of Outliers by Pastor Rob), I will be reading several of his books as soon as I can! I think Malcolm’s session was definitely one of my favorites.
Malcolm Gladwell has been a staff writer with The New Yorker Magazine since 1996. His 1999 profile of Ron Popeil won a National Magazine Award, and in 2005 he was named one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Infl uential People. He is the author of three books, The Tipping Point: How Little Things Make a Big Difference, Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking, and Outliers: The Story of Success, all of which were number one New York Times bestsellers.

- Miscalibration = Thinking that you know more than you really do; overconfidence in your knowledge.
- Incompetence irritates me; over confidence scares me.
- At the Battle of Chancellorsville in the Civil War, Hooker assumed the Lee was retreating and he didn’t prepare for all possibilities. Even after being told that Lee’s men had stopped and appeared to be preparing to charge, Hooker refused to believe.
- What we need from our leaders in times of crisis in humility; not bold, daring decision making.
- Warning sign – Leader cutting self off from others and their perspectives.
